Questions parents ask

How many mainstream schools are there in Kent?

Kent has 482 state mainstream schools (405 primary, 73 secondary and 4 all-through or middle). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 14.9% of pupils got SEN support and 3.1% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 12.8% of pupils got SEN support and 2.9% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).

Which mainstream schools in Kent have an SEN unit or resourced provision?

Ashford Oaks Community Primary School, Bishops Down Primary and Nursery School, Bromstone Primary School, Broadstairs, Cage Green Primary School, Castle Hill Community Primary School, Chilmington Green Primary School, Copperfield Academy, Dover Christ Church Academy, Ebbsfleet Green Primary School, Finberry Primary School, Fleetdown Primary Academy and Folkestone Academy, and 60 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.

How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?

Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Kent council for an EHC needs assessment.

What do the figures mean?

SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
