Common questions

Can I claim DLA for a child with autism or ADHD?

There is no set list of conditions. Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children looks at how much extra care, supervision or help getting around your child needs compared with other children their age, not the diagnosis itself. Many children with autism, ADHD and other needs qualify.

What benefits can I get for a disabled child?

The main ones are DLA for children (under 16), Carer’s Allowance if you care for them at least 35 hours a week, extra Universal Credit if your child gets DLA, and practical help like a Blue Badge and a council tax reduction. The checker looks at each of these against your answers.

Does claiming DLA affect other benefits?

DLA isn’t means-tested and is usually ignored as income. It often increases other support: it can unlock the disabled child amount in Universal Credit and open the door to Carer’s Allowance. It’s worth checking everything together.

Is this checker official?

No. SEN2gether is a community interest company run by SEND families, not a government body. The checker is a starting point. Always check the official pages, and for advice about your own situation, speak to your local SENDIASS or a benefits adviser such as Citizens Advice.
