Talking to school
How to prepare for meetings and work as a team.
A good relationship with school changes everything. You are on the same team, both wanting your child to thrive, and a little preparation goes a long way.
Before a meeting
- Write down two or three clear aims, what you most want to come away with.
- Bring specific examples from home, and your diary.
- Ask if a friend or advocate can come with you, two sets of ears really help.
Good questions to ask
- What support is in place right now, and how is it working?
- What is the plan, who is responsible, and when will we review it?
- Is my child on SEN Support, and what does the graduated approach look like for them?
Afterwards
Aim for a team relationship with the SENCO, warm, but clear. Always follow up in writing with a short email confirming what was agreed and by when. It keeps everyone accountable and gives you a record you can rely on.
If you are stuck
If a conversation stalls or you disagree, your local SENDIASS service offers free, impartial advice and can even come to meetings with you.
