Questions parents ask

How many mainstream schools are there in East Sussex?

East Sussex has 147 state mainstream schools (132 primary, 13 secondary and 2 all-through or middle). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 17.2% of pupils got SEN support and 2.5% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 15.1% of pupils got SEN support and 2.2% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).

Which mainstream schools in East Sussex have an SEN unit or resourced provision?

All Saints Church of England Primary School, Bexhill, Ark Little Ridge Primary Academy, Bexhill High Academy, Chailey St Peter's Church of England Primary School, Churchwood Primary School, Denton Community Primary School and Nursery, Grovelands Community Primary School, Hailsham Academy, Heathfield Community College, Manor Primary School, Meridian Community Primary School and Nursery and Mulberry Academy Hastings, and 10 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.

How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?

Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask East Sussex council for an EHC needs assessment.

What do the figures mean?

SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
