Questions parents ask
How many mainstream schools are there in Southend-on-Sea?
Southend-on-Sea has 36 state mainstream schools (27 primary and 9 secondary). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 15% of pupils got SEN support and 4.8% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 11.3% of pupils got SEN support and 2.8% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).
Which mainstream schools in Southend-on-Sea have an SEN unit or resourced provision?
Blenheim Primary School, Chase High School, Fairways Primary School, Greenways Primary School, Hamstel Infant School and Nursery, Shoeburyness High School, Southend High School for Boys, Temple Sutton Primary School and Thorpedene Primary School & Nursery. They are listed with the area’s special schools.
How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?
Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Southend-on-Sea council for an EHC needs assessment.
What do the figures mean?
SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
