Questions parents ask
How many mainstream schools are there in Reading?
Reading has 40 state mainstream schools (34 primary and 6 secondary). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 17.3% of pupils got SEN support and 3.9% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 12.1% of pupils got SEN support and 2.6% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).
Which mainstream schools in Reading have an SEN unit or resourced provision?
Blagdon Nursery School, Blessed Hugh Faringdon Catholic School, Christ The King Catholic Primary School, E P Collier Primary School, Highdown School and Sixth Form Centre, King's Academy Prospect, New Bridge Nursery School, New Town Primary School, Norcot Early Years Centre, Oxford Road Community School, River Academy and Southcote Primary School, and 2 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.
How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?
Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Reading council for an EHC needs assessment.
What do the figures mean?
SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
