In January 2026, at its primary schools, 16.4% of pupils got SEN support and 5.4% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 15.4% of pupils got SEN support and 4.7% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).

Which mainstream schools in Manchester have an SEN unit or resourced provision?

Abraham Moss Community School, Alma Park Primary School, Ashbury Meadow Primary School, Barlow Hall Primary School, Benchill Primary School, Bowker Vale Primary School, Broad Oak Primary School, Co-op Academy Medlock, Gorton Primary School, Higher Openshaw Community School, Manchester Academy and Newall Green Primary School, and 14 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.

How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?

Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Manchester council for an EHC needs assessment.

What do the figures mean?

SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
