Questions parents ask
How many mainstream schools are there in Isle of Wight?
Isle of Wight has 35 state mainstream schools (31 primary and 4 secondary). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 17.9% of pupils got SEN support and 5.2% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 16.6% of pupils got SEN support and 4.8% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).
Which mainstream schools in Isle of Wight have an SEN unit or resourced provision?
Brading Church of England Controlled Primary School, Brighstone Church of England Aided Primary School, Carisbrooke College, Greenmount Primary School, Hunnyhill Ormiston Academy, Medina College, St Francis Catholic and Church of England Primary Academy and The Bay Church of England School. They are listed with the area’s special schools.
How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?
Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Isle of Wight council for an EHC needs assessment.
What do the figures mean?
SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
