Questions parents ask
How many mainstream schools are there in Hackney?
Hackney has 55 state mainstream schools (41 primary and 14 secondary). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 16.9% of pupils got SEN support and 6.4% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 15.5% of pupils got SEN support and 4.9% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).
Which mainstream schools in Hackney have an SEN unit or resourced provision?
Comet Nursery School and Children's Centre, Gainsborough Primary School, Harrington Hill Primary School, Millfields Community School, Mossbourne Community Academy, Nightingale Primary School, Queensbridge Primary School, Sebright School, Shoreditch Park Primary School, Simon Marks Jewish Primary School, The Excelsior Academy and Thomas Fairchild Community School, and 1 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.
How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?
Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Hackney council for an EHC needs assessment.
What do the figures mean?
SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
