Questions parents ask

How many mainstream schools are there in Devon?

Devon has 331 state mainstream schools (295 primary, 32 secondary and 4 all-through or middle). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 16.3% of pupils got SEN support and 4% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 15.9% of pupils got SEN support and 4.6% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).

Which mainstream schools in Devon have an SEN unit or resourced provision?

Countess Wear Primary School, Great Torrington Bluecoat Church of England Primary School, Ilfracombe Church of England Junior School, King Edward VI Community College, Manor Primary School, Ivybridge, Marpool Primary School, Newport Community School Primary Academy, Northlew and Ashbury Parochial Church of England Primary School, Okehampton Primary School and Foundation Unit, Pilton Community College, Queen Elizabeth's and South Dartmoor Community College, and 6 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.

How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?

Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Devon council for an EHC needs assessment.

What do the figures mean?

SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
