Questions parents ask
How many mainstream schools are there in Cheshire East?
Cheshire East has 123 state mainstream schools (106 primary and 17 secondary). In January 2026, at its primary schools, 13% of pupils got SEN support and 4.6% had an EHC plan (England: 15.4% and 4.1%); at its secondary schools, 11.5% of pupils got SEN support and 4.6% had an EHC plan (England: 14.1% and 3.5%).
Which mainstream schools in Cheshire East have an SEN unit or resourced provision?
Bexton Primary School, Broken Cross Primary Academy and Nursery, Excalibur Primary School, Handforth Grange Primary School, Hermitage Primary School, Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, Hungerford Primary Academy, Ivy Bank Primary School, Leighton Academy, Lindow Community Primary School, Marlfields Primary School and Middlewich High School, and 8 more. They are listed with the area’s special schools.
How do I get SEN support at a mainstream school?
Talk to the class teacher and the school’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). Your child doesn’t need a diagnosis. If they need more help than the school can usually give, you or the school can ask Cheshire East council for an EHC needs assessment.
What do the figures mean?
SEN support is help in school without an EHC plan; an EHC plan is a legal plan from the council for children who need more. The figures show how many children a school supports, not how well, so talk to the SENCO and read the school’s SEN information report.
