Dyscalculia

7 sections

What is Dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia is a neurological difference, the term is used to describe a specific learning difference in understanding and working with numbers and mathematical concepts. A complex condition that affects a person's ability to process, organise, and apply numerical information confidently and accurately.
Dyscalculia is a difference in number sense and mathematical processing. It affects the brain processes involved in understanding, organising, and applying numerical information.

For some children, this shows up mainly in basic number skills (counting, estimating, remembering facts, or performing calculations). For others, it also affects problem-solving, sequencing steps in calculations, or understanding patterns and mathematical concepts, even if their thinking and verbal reasoning are strong.

Importantly, dyscalculia does not mean a lack of intelligence or creativity, many students with dyscalculia have excellent ideas and logical thinking but may need alternative strategies or tools to work with numbers effectively (calculators, visual supports, manipulatives, step-by-step guidance, etc.).

So while number processing is often the most visible challenge, dyscalculia is really about how the brain understands and organises mathematical information. Many people with dyscalculia do not have an intellectual challenge, though as with all conditions, challenges might be co-occurring.
