Understanding Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological condition where the brain has sudden, temporary bursts of electrical activity. These experiences are called seizures.

Think of it like an electrical circuit in the brain that occasionally has a temporary surge; or a disruption in typical brain signalling. The brain messages become over-synchronised and too many signals are sent at once. The brain works differently, not incorrectly.

This surge temporarily changes how a person feels, acts or thinks and has an impact on awareness, movement or outward behaviours

Key Things to Know:
  • Epilepsy can be experienced by people of any age.
  • Epilepsy is not one single condition, but a spectrum of many different types.
  • Epilepsy is not a mental illness and is not contagious.
  • With proper management, most people with epilepsy can lead full, active lives.
