Asperger's Syndrome

What is Asperger's Syndrome?

Asperger's syndrome was once considered a distinct recognised condition, however it has since been reclassified under the broader umbrella of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The reclassification was shared in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5, 5th Edition, 2013). While the medical community now uses "autism" as the official term, many people who were originally identified with Asperger's continue to feel a strong connection to that identification. For them, "Asperger's" reflects an important part of their identity and lived experience.

It is important to respect each individual's choice in how they describe themselves, whether they prefer "autistic", "on the spectrum," or "Asperger's". Personal identity and self-expression deserve recognition and respect.
