Masking

What is Masking?

Masking is a coping strategy where neurodiverse individuals, either consciously or unconsciously, alter, conceal, or suppress behaviours and traits to conform to societal expectations and standards. This can include mimicking non-autistic behaviours, scripting conversations, forcing eye contact, or suppressing sensory reactions to avoid being judged or excluded.

Research suggests that masking is particularly common in settings where neurodiverse traits are not well understood or accepted. While it may help individuals navigate social situations, it comes at a significant cost.
